Album Review: Until We Meet Again by Sy Smith
With the support of Zo!, Tall Black Guy, and Phonte, Sy Smith presents their sixth studio LP, a sumptuous offering in modern soul music.
A versatile contemporary soul vocalist with a range spanning five octaves, Sy Smith has been an integral figure in the music industry since the 1990s. Her journey includes roles from being a backing singer for Whitney Houston to a pivotal presence in Chris Botti’s ensemble.
Notably, her collaboration extends to The Foreign Exchange group, contributing significantly not only to their albums but also on solo projects by founders Nicolay and Phonte, as well as featuring prominently across all of Zo!’s records under the same label. Until We Meet Again, her sixth studio album, emerges under The Foreign Exchange banner, boasting production by the Abstractions pair and executive production by Phonte.
Diverging from her earlier self-released LPs, where she took on multiple instrumental roles, Smith now focuses her talents on vocal production and arrangement. This latest work showcases her meticulous attention to detail, involving six other vocalists whose contributions merit individual recognition. Moreover, Smith continues to shine as a songwriter throughout this project.
Until We Meet Again is structured meticulously, initiating with a scatting tribute that swirls with affection towards a beloved figure and concluding with a heartfelt homage to departed family and friends. Nestled between these emotional bookends are love songs that roam from vibrant ballads to more brisk compositions as the album progresses. A seamless transition occurs midway, moving from the show-stopping “Always Pick Up for You” into “Slide,” which pulses with energy thanks to Pirahnahead’s Soulchestra strings.
The album also delves into Brazilian influences, particularly evident in “Masterclass,” enriched by Sheila E.’s percussion and Leo Amuedo’s acoustic guitar strums. Adding further diversity are hip-hop soul gems like “Summer of ’93” and “All the Ways,” showcasing Smith’s dynamic vocal capability.
Smith’s performance is consistently captivating, whether employing her whistle register or delivering potent lyrics with precision. In tracks like “Why Do You Keep Calling Me,” she embodies both sweetness and sly critique, especially when addressing mediocrity in a partner. Her frustration peaks in a powerful whistle-tone scream, a clear message delivered without needing to resort to harsh words.
Sy Smith’s Until We Meet Again is a polished reflection of her growth as an artist and producer. It weaves together various musical influences and personal reflections into a cohesive narrative that celebrates love, remembers lost ones, and confronts disappointments with grace and artistry.
