Introduction: We Are Shattering the Standards
Just as a seed doesn't complete its purpose until it goes into the ground, and just as a sower completes the purpose by letting go of the seed. Welcome to Shatter the Standards.
Sypnosis
Hi, welcome. This Substack is about Shatter the Standards, a newsletter dedicated to unearthing lesser-known musical gems and promoting discussions around albums and new music that might not receive ample attention in mainstream conversations. The blog takes a stand against the notion that specific music genres are fading and, instead, endeavors to highlight the enduring relevance and evolving nature of these genres.
Introduction
Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Brandon O'Sullivan. I'm a music fan, producer, and philanthropist, and I want to give back to you. That's value. Whether it was a purchase or something as simple as a listen, you gave the creators value. Whether you've liked so many producers and artists and creators who told us how much they've impacted your music or whether you've just purchased out of curiosity, you gave them a heart that now knows value. Now, I want to spend every moment we have as music fans simply giving it back to you. Forever, you've given me something that we can be thankful for. That's you. I am grateful to you.
Why I created this Substack?
I wanted to create this space to celebrate milestones and share some undiscovered music, as there is too much out there that people cannot catch up on and miss out on other dope material. Plus, there are so many talks online about this genre being dead in the mainstream (ahem, Hip-Hop and R&B), but the people with the most influence to bring awareness need to put the effort to help push that forward instead of using it as a marketing ploy. Some of us can agree that today’s popular music doesn’t emote the same feelings for us as it used to, but I expect there to be balance and variety in one’s creativity/expression of a said beloved genre. With Shatter the Standards, we are changing that as we highlight the gems that must be exposed to the audience. And lastly, I will highlight some musicians that deserve their flowers while they're alive to smell them. Whether it’s a random thought or an album anniversary, there’s nothing better than celebrating the ones that inspire you.
With that said, gather them up, and you’ll find loaves of faithfulness in every moment.
