Looking Back at A$AP Rocky's Testing: When Fusion Fails
An introspective dive into the chaos and contradictions of Rocky's experimental project.
A$AP Rocky's Testing, which dropped in 2018, represented an attempt by the Harlem rapper to veer off the beaten path. Rocky, a standout in the modern hip-hop scene, was no stranger to risk-taking, with his previous albums always featuring a distinct aesthetic. Yet, in this ambitious project, he ventured outside his comfort zone into sonic experimentation.
However, when challenging the status quo, one must proceed cautiously; too often, the excitement of change overshadows craft and finesse; Rocky likely mistook that when creating Testing.
"DISTORTED RECORDS," the opening track, for instance, paints a fair picture of the entire album. Sounds from across the spectrum are mixed together to form this cacophony of noises and tones, from an ear-splitting siren to a booming bass drum beat. Although the track stands out for its audacity, it lacks the cohesion to make such a daring move work.
Much like its introductory piece, Testing is, in many respects, an assortment of fragments - individual sound bites strung together without a solid foundation. The lack of fluidity is perhaps most evident in "Purity." Although Frank Ocean's emotive voice adds a softer touch, the track's erratic rhythm fails to unite its various elements into a cohesive entity.
However, it's not to say that Testing lacks moments that hold promise. "Praise the Lord (Da Shine)" featuring Skepta is a track that gives glimpses of Rocky's true potential. The flute-driven beat paired with Skepta's grimy verses makes for a compelling combination, revealing what could be achieved when Rocky's ideas are well executed.
Testing reveals A$AP Rocky's growth as an artist despite its rough edges. While his previous albums were a testament to his affinity for cloud rap and psychedelic influences, Testing saw Rocky treading unfamiliar territory. The sonic experimentation shown here shows the rapper's willingness to break free from norms, even if it doesn't necessarily yield favorable results.
Nevertheless, Testing represents a step in Rocky's journey, even if it might be a stumble. It shows the risks inherent in creativity and the unpredictable results such attempts can yield. The album's diverse sounds capture the uncertainty associated with venturing out of one's comfort zone, an experience many artists and listeners can relate to.
Yet it is crucial to remember that growth does not always result in immediate success. And while Testing may not stand as Rocky's finest work, it sets a precedent for the artist's future pursuits - an indication that he is not afraid to experiment and challenge himself, no matter the results.
A$AP Rocky's Testing might not have hit the right chords, but it is an essential part of his narrative as an artist to his bold spirit, a lesson learned, and a stepping stone toward future endeavors.
